Boating Season 2017 Gets Underway

Dave Hill

Shipwright Harbor Marina hosted a terrific cookout on June 3rd, to kick off the boating season.  A good guess is close to 100 slipholders gathered at the Point for great chow, fantastic music, and excellent slipmate comradery.  Many Chesapeake Bay sea stories were told around Zoe’s dingy, which was filled with cheer.

Everyone enjoyed low country shrimp boil, burgers, dogs, mac and cheese, baked beans (Vic Curtis’ famous blend), and a lot of very tasty side dishes brought by all to be shared.  The F-Dockers expertly manned the grills and provided all the food preps.

Jed welcomed everyone and provided some great info on marina improvements and other happenings.

The highlight of the evening was the great music provided by Sh’Boom!  Former F Dockers Pete and Margaret Lowenstein, now officially retired, made the trip from their new home (and pontoon boat!) at Lake Monticello to carry on the tradition of performing at Shipwright Harbor cookouts.  It was great seeing them!

We’re already looking forward to our next gathering at the Point!

Twin Creeks Water Tax-Z
If you visited the marina over the past weekend you may have noticed a rather checkered pontoon boat perusing the creeks. Captain Dennis Zimmerman, or Capt. Z, has begun running a “Water Tax-Z” between the twin creeks. Give him a call at 443-995-9957 or on VHF Cannel 71 between the hours of 11am and 8pm Fridays and Saturdays, or 11am and 4pm on Sundays, to cruise between marinas or to hitch a ride to dine at your favorite creekside restaurant. He’ll pick you up wherever you are, whether it’s Dockside Restaurant, Happy Harbor, Shipwright Harbor, Skipper’s Pier, or any other marina in Deale. He operates free of charge, accepts gratuity, and is a fun way to travel the creeks!
THE POOL IS OPEN!

The pool is cool and refreshing so stop by for a dip!

Scott Berman

Well, you probably have seen Scott around the marina once or twice, but besides being the "marina guy" Scott is the lead character in his own story. Here at Shipwright he has always tried to make boating easy and fun. Scott has sailed extensively around North America and the Caribbean. In winter he sails Florida's Gulf Coast. Besides taking the helm of every kind of boat, Scott can also drive a car, golf cart, skateboard, and his mom insane. Next time you see him say, "Hi!", he won't bite!

On the Hook

Dave Hill

Next door slipmate, Ed (Southern Pilot), once told me a goal of Connie and his is to anchor in every river, bay and creek on the Chesapeake Bay. Dorothy and I would love to do the same. We usually head to a spot on the western Bay or head across to the western Eastern Shore for a weekend of fun. We always take our kayaks to explore the area once we set the hook. Kayaking followed by something on the grill and a glass or two of wine tops the day off nicely.

Favorite spots include the Rhode River on this side (you always see a boat or two from Shipwright – like Brown Eyed Girl or 3 / 4 Time); over in the Eastern Bay (Wye East River, Drum Pt Bay); Choptank River (Dun Cove, San Domingo Creek – too many to list); Little Choptank ( east side of Casson Point, Hudson Creek – thanks for the recommendation to Dan and Cathy,  Zum Wohl).

For this edition of The Point, I’ll spotlight our favorite anchorage in Leadenham Creek. From the Choptank, take Fl G 1B to port and head up Broad Creek. Take R N 2 to starboard and continue heading north (R N 2 is small and hard to spot). Take the G1 – R2 gate westbound into Leadenham Creek. Watch your chartplotter here, as it drops to 1-2 feet very quickly south of the channel. We have in fact intentionally touched bottom here to confirm the charted depth! Take Baby Owl Cove (nice spot) and Caulk Cove to starboard. You have arrived – set the anchor detail! Anchor just off the western point of the third cove, in 7 feet of water. If you are able to, anchor just inside the cove in 5 feet mlw. No homes are visible and it is very serene. Lots of birds and rays feeding on the surface. We’ve seen the bottom in 3-4 feet of water while kayaking, due to the abundance of oysters in the cove.

Have a favorite place to hook? Write it up and send it our way!
A Rope is a Rope
Rocky Jones for Boat US

A rope is a rope,
but sometimes a line.
Or it might be a painter
towing the dinghy behind.

From fiber to yarn,
then strand into rope.
It's the twisting that does it
which makes strong at the scope.

There's polys and sisal,
manila and hemp.
But when buying nylon
your money's well spent.

The big one's the howser
with strain to defend.
The little one's the small stuff
for seizing the end.

The rode holds the anchor
in mud, sand, or rock.
The bow, spring, and stern lines
hold the ship to the dock.
You pay out a drogue line
when caught in a gale.
But pay out a halyard
and down comes the sail.

A bell rope it might be
clanging the time of the day.
Or it might be a cable
holding the mast with a stay.

On wash day at Granma's
clothes pins were used.
But a sailor needs clothes stops
to hang up his blues.

If you pull on a sheet
your toes will get cold.
But when in a boat
the sails will unfold!

Be it braided or twisted
fiber or steel.
It's still just a rope
if it stays on the reel.
