Fall Boating
The Beach Boys had the right idea with their Endless Summer album. However, seeing as we aren't in Southern California in the mid 70's, an endless summer isn't something we get to enjoy here on the Bay. But don't let it get you down - here are four reasons fall offers some of the best boating on the Chesapeake.
Open Water
With school back in session and the summer tourists back home, the Chesapeake tends to be a little less crowded on the water come fall. Whether you're out cruising, at a fuel dock, calling for a slip at a marina or a table at a waterfront restaurant, chances are you'll have no traffic, wait, or lines.
Fall Foliage
One of the most beautiful parts of fall is the stunning change in color and you can't beat the views from the Bay of the fall foliage lining the shore. A picnic at anchor with the autumn colors in full view can't be beat this time of year.
More Wind, Less Heat
This one is for the sailors. In summer, as I'm sure many a sailor has experienced, you tend to find that wind is an elusive, tricky friend. Often leaving you stagnant and sweating in it's frequent absence. But not in fall folks. In fall the wind has returned, blowing your hair back and vessel forward.
Great Fishing
Another well known boating fact is just how good the fishing can be in the fall vs the summer. As the water cools a couple things happen: 1) fish begin to feed more frequently to prepare for the coming winter and 2) the re-oxygenation of the water encourages fish activity that is best to take advantage of.
